SEMANTIC-PRAGMATIC FEATURES OF PHRASEOLOGICAL AND FIXED EXPRESSIONS IN NAGUIB MAHFOUZ’S NOVEL CHILDREN OF GEBELAWI (AWLAD HARATINA) AND ISSUES OF THEIR TRANSLATION INTO UZBEK

Abstract
This article examines the semantic and pragmatic features of phraseological, metaphorical, and fixed expressions used in Naguib Mahfouz’s novel «أولاد حارتنا», as well as the issues involved in translating them into Uzbek. The study aims to identify the semantic structure, communicative functions, and stylistic value of the selected units in the literary text and to determine effective strategies for translating them into Uzbek. The research material consists of nine units purposefully selected from the sixth edition of the novel, published by Dār al-Ādāb in Beirut in 1986. Descriptive-analytical, semantic, contextual, linguopragmatic, comparative, and translation analysis methods were employed. Based on their communicative functions, the selected units were classified into three groups: discourse-communicative units, expressive-evaluative units, and units expressing actions and social relations. The findings demonstrate that these units play an important role in ensuring textual cohesion, revealing the characters’ psychological states and attitudes, enhancing emotional and expressive impact, and representing social conflicts. The translation analysis showed that some units can be rendered through full or functional equivalents, whereas figurative and context-dependent units require contextual translation, metaphorical reformulation, and pragmatic adaptation. The scientific novelty of the study lies in classifying the semantic, pragmatic, and translational features of the units selected from the novel within a unified analytical framework and in systematizing strategies for their translation into Uzbek. The findings may be applied in Arabic-Uzbek literary translation, the teaching of Arabic phraseology, and the linguopragmatic analysis of literary texts.Keywords
