FEATURES OF EXPRESSING EMOTIONALITY AT THE PHRASEOLOGICAL LEVEL

Abstract

This article examines the essence of the concept of emotionality – one of the topical directions in modern linguistics – and the features of its manifestation within the system of phraseological units. Since language and emotion constitute a closely interconnected reality, the study of the mechanisms of expressing emotions in speech remains relevant across a number of disciplines, including psychology, philosophy, sociology, and linguistics. The article provides a comparative analysis of the relationship between the concepts of emotionality and feeling, their interdisciplinary interpretations, and summarizes the scholarly views of researchers such as E. G'oziyev, A. Hojiyev, U. Rashidova, Sh. Safarov, and Q. Musaev on this issue. The theoretical basis of the study lies in the function of phraseological units as an important linguistic means that enhances imagery and emotional-expressiveness in speech. Based on materials from the Uzbek phraseological dictionary, phraseological units expressing emotionality were selected and analyzed; they were divided into positive (joy, delight, surprise) and negative (anger, sorrow, distress) semantic groups, each systematically presented in separate tables. Furthermore, the three main functions of emotivity proposed by U. Rashidova – evaluative, emotional, and expressive –are explained through concrete phraseological examples, specifically demonstrating the influence of phonetic, lexical, and grammatical changes on the degree of expressiveness. The study employed methods of description, observation, contextual analysis, componential analysis, and statistical classification. The findings show that a significant portion of Uzbek phraseological units serve to figuratively express a person's inner world, psychological state, and emotional experiences, making them one of the most important linguistic means of ensuring emotional-expressiveness in speech. The article also briefly addresses the significance of emotional phraseological units in the translation process. The results of the study hold theoretical and practical value for further scholarly research in the fields of phraseology, linguoculturology, and cognitive linguistics, and can also serve as a practical resource for teaching linguistics, stylistics, and translation studies at higher education institutions, as well as for compiling explanatory and phraseological dictionaries.
