THE SEMANTICS OF RUSSIAN VERBS OF MOTION WITH THE PREFIXES PERE-, U-, DO-, PRI-

Abstract

The article examines the semantic structure of Russian prefixed verbs of motion formed with the prefixes pere-, u-, do-, and pri-. The relevance of the study is determined by the fact that verbs of motion constitute one of the most complex subsystems of the Russian verb to describe and acquire: their meaning results from the interaction of the lexical semantics of the root (unidirectionality/multidirectionality, manner and medium of motion), aspectual characteristics, and the spatial-resultative semantics of the prefix. The study offers a comparative analysis of the four prefixes in terms of the vector of motion they express, the way the limit of motion is reached, and the type of government they require. It is shown that the prefix pere- introduces the idea of overcoming a spatial landmark and dividing the trajectory into a "before" and an "after" (perejti, perejexat'), the prefix u- expresses the subject's removal from the speaker's field of vision and, in reflexive forms, the idea of an intentional, often covert displacement (ujti, uexat', uskol'znut'), the prefix do- fixes the attainment of the final point of motion as a limit that necessarily requires an explicit landmark (dojti do doma), while the prefix pri- denotes arrival, approach to the speaker or another reference point, and the appearance of the object within the field of observation (prijti, priexat', prinesti). Based on the analysis of dictionary definitions and usage contexts, general patterns of interaction between the spatial and temporal (resultative) components of prefix meaning and the semantics of the verbal stem are identified. The results of the study can be applied in the practice of teaching Russian as a foreign language, as well as in compiling textbooks and dictionaries of collocability.
