Abstract

This article examines understanding as a psycholinguistic problem, specifically within the process of perceiving contemporary newspaper text. The relevance of the study is determined by the constantly growing volume of information transmitted through mass media and the importance of its adequate comprehension for the communicative culture of society. The aim of the article is to systematize philosophicallinguistic and psycholinguistic interpretations of the concept of understanding, and to characterize its types, levels and mechanisms, in particular the linguistic and extralinguistic factors that influence the perception of newspaper text. The objectives of the study include revealing the essence of the concept of understanding, analyzing its classifications (G.I.Ruzavin, V.P.Belyanin), examining the macro-rules of understanding the main content of a text (T.van Dijk, Kim Bong-sun), and determining the role of headlines, context and association in the process of understanding. The study relies on descriptive, comparative and contextual methods of analysis, as well as systematic analysis of scholarly literature. The results show that understanding is not a single-stage but a multi-level, creative-intellectual process dependent on the recipient's level of knowledge and communicative experience. The macro - rules - the rule of generalization, the rule of deletion, the rule of integration (selection) and the rule of construction - play an essential role in understanding the main content of a text. The comprehension of newspaper text is markedly influenced by the activity level of the lexical layer, syntactic structure, contextual associations, and the pragmatic features of headlines. The conclusions obtained can be applied in the psycholinguistic analysis of contemporary Uzbek newspaper texts, as well as in teaching the theory of text understanding.
