The Artistic and Descriptive Functions of the Motif of Light and Darkness in the Chronotope of the Novel «Ulysses»

Abstract

(in English) This article examines the poetic function of the chronotope and the artisticsemantic role of the motifs of light and darkness in James Joyce's Ulysses. In modernist literature, time and space function not merely as settings for events but as essential poetic categories that reflect the characters' consciousness, the author's aesthetic conception, and the philosophical framework of the narrative. From this perspective, Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of the chronotope serves as the methodological foundation of the study, enabling an analysis of the interrelationship between space, time, and the stream of consciousness in selected episodes of the novel. The research employs comparative-typological, structural-semantic, hermeneutic, and interpretative methods of analysis. The episodes "Lestrygonians," "Hades," "Wandering Rocks," "Circe," "Oxen of the Sun," and "Penelope" were selected as the primary objects of investigation. These episodes reveal the poetic functions of the motifs of light and darkness within different chronotopic models of the novel.The findings demonstrate that in Joyce's artistic universe, Dublin functions not merely as a geographical location but as a universal model of human consciousness. The motifs of light and darkness are not decorative literary devices; rather, they operate as significant semantic mechanisms expressing the psychological, philosophical, and ontological states of the characters. Time in the novel does not unfold linearly; instead, it is continually reshaped by memory, the stream of consciousness, and the characters' inner experiences. Consequently, the chronotope emerges as the central poetic category that structures the novel's composition. The study elucidates the mechanisms through which the theory of the chronotope operates in James Joyce's poetics and contributes to a deeper understanding of the structural-semantic significance of the motifs of light and darkness in the modernist novel.
