THE MODE OF MELANCHOLY IN WESTERN LITERARY AESTHETICS: THE WORKS OF FRANZ KAFKA, ALBERT CAMUS AND JAMES JOYCE AND ITS POETIC TRANSFORMATION IN CONTEMPORARY UZBEK PROSE

Abstract
This article examines the problem of the mode of melancholy in Western literary and aesthetic thought of the twentieth century. The mode of melancholy is interpreted as a complex aesthetic phenomenon associated with human spiritual suffering, alienation, loneliness, and the search for the meaning of existence. The study analyzes existential motifs, absurd thinking, and conflicts between the individual and society in the works of Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, and James Joyce. Particular attention is paid to Kafka’s symbolic representation of human alienation, Camus’s philosophical concepts of absurdity and rebellion, and Joyce’s modernist exploration of human consciousness. The article also investigates the transformation of Western modernist aesthetic principles in contemporary Uzbek prose through the works of Nazar Eshonqul and Abduqayum Yuldoshev. It demonstrates that Western modernist traditions were not simply imitated but creatively reinterpreted within the framework of Uzbek national thinking, moral values, and cultural traditions. The research concludes that the mode of melancholy should not be understood merely as pessimism. Rather, it represents an aesthetic category reflecting human self-awareness, spiritual search, and the desire to understand the essence of existence.Keywords
