Abstract

Slang neologisms in English and Russian are increasingly formed not through simple compounding or clipping but through conceptual blending, a cognitive mechanism that integrates two mental spaces into a single blended structure. Existing accounts of slang word-formation are usually limited to formal classifications of truncation and overlap, leaving the cognitive basis of the process and the translation difficulties it creates largely unaddressed. The scientific novelty of the study lies in applying Fauconnier and Turner's four-space network model of conceptual integration to a contrastive analysis of English blends and their Russian counterparts, together with a newly developed typology of translation strategies for rendering blended semantics. The aim of the research is to identify the cognitive mechanisms underlying slang blend formation and to determine effective strategies for translating such units from English into Russian. The material comprises 42 English slang blends drawn from lexicographic sources and corpus-based studies, and 15 Russian contamination-based coinages; selection required attestation in at least two independent sources. The methodology combines four-space cognitive modelling, contrastive-translational analysis, and a qualitative-quantitative classification of translation strategies. Among the 20 units examined in detail, transliteration with partial loss of internal segmentability proved the largest group (9 units), borrowing of the productive formant -holic accounted for 3 units, occasional calquing of the blend structure for 3 units, and descriptive translation for 5 units. A marked asymmetry in productivity was found: blending is an active word-formation pattern in English, whereas in Russian it remains peripheral, realised mainly through ironic-evaluative contamination. The results indicate that the choice of translation strategy depends primarily on the degree of structural and semantic transparency a blend retains for a target-language recipient. The proposed typology can be applied in lexicographic and translation practice, as well as in teaching translation and English lexicology.
