Abstract

This article examines the transformation of youth argot in the context of social media and its role in the formation of linguistic identity. The study aims to determine how young people’s digital identity is manifested through internet slang, abbreviations, memetic expressions, and code-switching involving Uzbek, Russian, and English elements on Instagram, TikTok, Telegram, and Facebook. Descriptive, comparative, lexical-semantic, contextual, and pragmatic methods of analysis were employed. The theoretical framework is based on Le Page and Tabouret-Keller’s concept of “acts of identity.” The findings indicate that secrecy and restricted group use, traditionally associated with argot, are being replaced in digital communication by rapid circulation, mass accessibility, multimodality, and transnationality. Through internet slang, young people strengthen group solidarity, establish boundaries between “insiders” and “outsiders,” and express evaluation, irony, and emotional attitudes. Code-switching is interpreted not as a linguistic deficiency but as a communicative strategy for adapting to an audience, displaying modernity, and constructing an individual digital persona. The study characterizes digital argot as a sociolinguistic mechanism that dynamically encodes youth identity. Its influence on the development of the standard language is also explained from a theoretically grounded perspective.
